Equipment Diagnostics Service
Assessing equipment condition to prevent failures and extend asset life
Non-destructive testing and remaining-life evaluation preventing failures
JERA's Equipment Diagnostics Service combines non-destructive testing (e.g. borescope inspection) with your operation and inspection data to judge equipment integrity, remaining life, and fitness for service — a user-side second opinion to conservative OEM advice. It prevents failures like boiler tube leaks, cuts cost by replacing only what's needed, and extends equipment life.
Issue
-
Frequent equipment failures
-
Limited asset health visibility
-
Rising O&M costs from equipment stress
AT A GLANCE
70+ years
Operating thermal power plants worldwide
WHY JERA
A user's second opinion, not a vendor's
JERA evaluates from an operator's view — for example, holding scale-behavior data across tube materials — more precise than conservative OEM calls.
OVERVIEW
What is Equipment Diagnostics Service
Equipment Diagnostics Service evaluates the integrity and remaining life of your plant's critical equipment. Combining non-destructive testing — such as borescope inspection — with your operation and inspection data, JERA performs an equipment condition assessment and remaining life assessment, and judges fitness for service. As a user-side second opinion to conservative OEM advice, a leading example is boiler tube creep-life evaluation, and the same approach extends to other equipment.
BENEFITS
What health diagnosis delivers
-
01
Improved availability
Fewer unplanned shutdowns from equipment failures.
-
02
Cost reduction
Replace or repair only what the data shows is necessary — not the OEM's blanket list.
-
03
Extended equipment life
Keep sound equipment in service longer, backed by fitness-for-service evidence.
CASE STUDY
One tube replaced instead of many
Boiler tube life assessment
CHALLENGE
A coal plant suffered frequent boiler tube leaks — each forcing a ~7-day outage — and the OEM's conservative recommendations called for costly, wholesale tube replacement.
SOLUTION
As a second opinion, JERA evaluated creep life on three critical parts (3rd-stage SH, 2nd-stage RH, 3rd-stage RH). The 3rd SH (33%) and 2nd RH (49%) sat inside the OEM's replace range but did not need replacing by JERA's criteria; only the 3rd RH had reached 100%.
RESULT
Replacing just the one tube cut cost versus the OEM estimate. With online creep monitoring added, tube-leak outages fell sharply and repairs could be planned around scheduled stops.

Q&A
Boiler tube leaks: Equipment Diagnostics Service, answered
Q. What is Equipment Diagnostics Service for boiler tube leaks?
It evaluates boiler tube creep life (Boiler Predictive Management) using your operation, drawing, and inspection data with JERA's proprietary formula. As an operator itself, JERA gives a user-based second opinion to conservative OEM calls — so you cut tube leaks, act only where needed, and extend tube life.
Q. How does online creep evaluation compare with spot (offline)?
Spot (offline) evaluation is calculated from inspection results and past operating data, so it does not reflect the current operating state. Online evaluation responds to metal temperature and creep-life consumption as they change moment to moment, so it always computes the latest remaining life and lets JERA propose a more effective replacement plan.
Q. Beyond creep-life evaluation, what else does JERA do to reduce tube leaks?
The causes of boiler tube leaks depend on plant operating conditions and design — thermal fatigue from boiler structure, insufficient water chemistry, and so on — and the countermeasures differ accordingly. JERA proposes measures matched to your plant's actual operating conditions, so please consult JERA first.
