Our company's View about CREA(Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air) Report and Related Reporting2023/05/31

Our company's view of the report (May 16, 2023) by the Finnish Think Tank (CREA) and related media published is as follows:

・According to the CREA report, while co-firing ammonia in power plants, the direct release of ammonia responsible for emissions of pollutants(PM2.5) into the air is significantly increased.

In 2019, the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program reported that ammonia co-firing has been conducted at the manufacturer's  large-scale combustion test facility,  and it has been confirmed that ammonia is not released outside the facility. So, ammonia is usually fully burned in the boiler.

・Even if ammonia is remained unburnt during co-firing, it is injected as a reducing agent to reduce nitrogen oxide in the flue gas denitrification equipment at JERA's power plants. So, the remaining ammonia is consumed as a reducing agent, and the amount of ammonia is strictly controlled at the outlet of the flue gas denitrification equipment.

・Furthermore,  ammonia is water-soluble and water is used in the equipment to remove sulfur oxides, dust and soot(wet type flue-gas desulfurization equipment, wet type electrostatic precipitator) in  JERA power plants. So, ammonia is not discharged from the chimney into the air. Therefore, ammonia co-firing does not increase air pollutants.
