Measures for Balancing Electricity Supply and Demand During the FY2026 Summer Peak-Load Period2026/07/01
JERA Co., Inc. (“JERA”) today announced that it has compiled measures for balancing electricity supply and demand during the summer peak-load period (July to September 2026), based on the outlook for electricity supply and demand for summer FY2026.
On May 20, the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry’s 6th Next-Generation Electricity and Gas Business Infrastructure Subcommittee Meeting compiled its outlook for electricity supply and demand for summer FY2026 and its measures for balancing electricity supply and demand.
To ensure a stable supply of electricity this summer, JERA is moving forward with the following measures to secure kW (by securing power supply capacity, conducting targeted inspections of power generation facilities, etc.) and kWh (by securing fuel).
1. Measures to Secure kW
• Securing Power Supply Capacity
Efficient Operation of Existing Power Supply Capacity
To secure power supply capacity for summer FY2026, JERA plans, wherever possible, to avoid scheduling thermal power plant repairs and inspections during the summer. Additional supply capacity has also been secured through the start of commercial operations at 10 units (totaling 7.31 GW) where replacement has been completed.
Securing Additional Supply Capacity
At the public auction for additional power supply capacity for summer FY2026 conducted by TEPCO Power Grid, Inc., JERA successfully bid to supply power from Sodegaura Thermal Power Station Unit 2 (Nakasode, Sodegaura-shi, Chiba-ken; 1 GW), which has been under long-term planned shutdown. JERA will operate this unit during this summer’s peak-load period and make every effort to ensure a stable supply of electricity.
Restoration Work and Facility Operations at Taketoyo Thermal Power Station
Based on plans, announced on November 22, 2024, to resume service following the fire at Taketoyo Thermal Power Station (Taketoyo-chō, Chita-gun, Aichi Prefecture), JERA is moving forward with restoration work and facility operations, placing the highest priority on safety while rigorously implementing measures to prevent recurrence.
JERA is moving forward with restoration work at Taketoyo Thermal Power Station with the aim of resuming operation using biomass co-firing by June 2028. As a provisional measure until such operation can be resumed, we will again operate the power station using coal during peak-demand periods this summer, thereby contributing to ensuring a stable supply of electricity.
• Targeted Inspections of Power Generation Facilities
In addition to strengthening internal systems, JERA is working to mitigate the risk of outages through targeted inspections and health assessments of boilers and other key equipment.
2. Measures to Secure kWh
• Securing Fuel
In terms of procuring fuel for this summer, JERA is arranging alternative LNG sources to maintain adequate inventory and anticipates no significant disruption to the electricity supply-demand balance for the time being. At the same time, rising LNG prices are expected to be reflected in electricity and gas rates beginning this summer.
Under these circumstances, JERA will continue to ensure a stable fuel supply through the optimization of flexible fuel procurement and resale activities conducted by our subsidiary JERA Global Markets.
Furthermore, a Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry council meeting held on March 27 indicated that, as an emergency measure, restrictions on the operation of inefficient coal-fired thermal power plants would not apply for FY2026. JERA will make effective use of available coal-fired thermal power plants, including less-efficient units, to help ensure a stable supply of electricity and reduce the burden on customers.
As a further initiative to reduce the burden on customers, JERA through its subsidiary, JERA Global Markets Co., Ltd. engaged in domestic power trading, will offer new power supply products designed to meet customers’ procurement needs during peak1 and evening2 demand periods, with sales commencing on July 1st. In addition, to help mitigate the risk of market price volatility during emergencies, JERA is considering the sale of power purchase agreements (PPA), including those involving coal-fired thermal power generation, as early as this summer.
Through these measures to secure both capacity (kW) and energy (kWh), as well as through the provision of power supply products aimed at reducing the burden on customers, the JERA Group will mobilize its full capabilities to ensure a stable and reliable energy supply.
