Receipt of 2025 Good Design Award2025/10/15

JERA Co. Inc. (“JERA”) and its subsidiary JERA Cross Co., Inc. (“JERA Cross”) hereby announce that they have received the 2025 Good Design Award for a project to eliminate CO2 emissions from electricity consumed at TOHO STUDIOS, Japan’s largest movie studio.

TM & Ⓒ TOHO CO., LTD.

Project Overview
The project began as an initiative to eliminate entertainment industry CO2 emissions by introducing 24/7 carbon-free energy* to Japanese film production for the first time (according to research by JERA). TOHO CO., LTD., which operates in the entertainment sector centered on cinema, and JERA, which drives pioneering efforts to eliminate CO2 emissions from the energy sector, have begun supplying hydrogen-based electricity to TOHO STUDIOS through JERA Cross.
Starting in FY 2024, the project will engage in a phased adoption of carbon-free energy with the goal to achieving 24/7 carbon-free energy by around 2030.

Technology Overview
Analyzing electricity demand on an hourly basis, new rooftop solar facilities were installed and a new, dedicated 390kW hydrogen power generation facility was installed on site at Sodegaura Thermal Power Station. The system uses EnergyTag-compliant tracking to match power generation and consumption in real time and covers any shortfall with actual power sources rather than no-fossil certificates. Supply and demand data is displayed and can be confirmed through a portal.
Introduce in phases beginning in FY 2024, the project aims to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions while minimizing any impact on filming schedules and costs. By meeting Scope 3 reduction criteria required by global distribution companies and advertising clients, the project will have ripple effects as a GX (Green Transformation) model for the domestic film industry.

*“24/7 carbon-free energy” is a name for electricity that emits no CO2 twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. In accordance with the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry’s “Guidelines for Retail Sales of Electricity,” this means providing 100% of the electricity supply from zero-CO2 emission sources (renewable energy generation facilities and hydrogen power generation facilities), including the environmental value derived from the use of non-fossil certificates; it does not mean that no CO2 is emitted across the fuel lifecycle including production and transportation.
