Investment in Kyoto Fusioneering Ltd., a Company Working to Realize Fusion Energy2025/09/09
JERA Co., Inc. (“JERA”), through its corporate venture capital arm, JERA Ventures, has invested in Kyoto Fusioneering Ltd. (“Kyoto Fusioneering”), a startup company aiming to realize fusion energy.
Fusion energy is the immense energy generated when light atomic nuclei fuse under conditions of high temperature and pressure. Its fuel can be primarily extracted from seawater, and the process of generating electricity using fusion energy produces no CO2. Furthermore, it is a technology that does not trigger chain reactions, is inherently low risk, and produces no high-level radioactive waste. Consequently, research and development efforts are accelerating globally, positioning fusion as a next-generation clean energy solution to environmental and energy challenges.
Kyoto Fusioneering is advancing the research and development of essential systems for the realization of fusion power plants through projects such as "UNITY-1," which conducts demonstration tests of thermal cycle systems designed to efficiently recover and utilize the immense energy generated by fusion reactions, and "UNITY-2," which focuses on demonstration tests of fusion fuel cycle systems. Furthermore, the Fusion Energy Power Generation Demonstration Project FAST (Fusion by Advanced Superconducting Tokamak), which Kyoto Fusioneering initiated as project leader, aims to demonstrate power generation in the 2030s through industry-academia collaboration.

The JERA Group, under its “JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050” initiative, is striving to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions from its domestic and international operations by 2050. This involves expanding renewable energy and developing zero-emission thermal power generation that does not emit CO2 during power generation. Through this investment, we will work to gain new insights into fusion energy and explore its practical application potential. By supporting the industrialization of fusion energy, we will contribute to stable energy supply and decarbonization.
