SAKURA internet and JERA Sign a Basic Agreement to Explore Establishing Data Centers Connected to Power Infrastructure at Power Stations2025/06/05

SAKURA internet Inc. (“SAKURA internet”) and JERA Co., Inc. (“JERA”) signed a basic agreement to explore establishing data centers (“DCs”) connected to power infrastructure on 5 June.

AI technology has made remarkable advances in recent years and is expected to play a role in making society more convenient and prosperous. At the same time, it has also become clear that the enormous amount of electricity consumed by the DCs that sustain advanced AI technology is an issue for society.
While developing infrastructure to meet the demand for AI, SAKURA internet has addressed the accompanying increase in DC power consumption by utilizing renewable energy in an effort to decarbonize. Responding to customer demand to achieve both supply stability and decarbonization, JERA is building a clean energy platform as it works to supply low-carbon and decarbonized electricity at scale.

SAKURA internet, which aims to achieve decarbonization not only in renewable energy but also in the use of clean electricity, and JERA, a leader in zero-emissions initiatives in the energy sector, have reached the current agreement because they believe that joining their respective strengths can contribute to solving this issue for society.
The agreement provides for exploring the establishment of DCs on the grounds of existing thermal power stations owned by JERA. Progress in this exploration will make it possible for SAKURA internet to provide digital infrastructure that utilizes clean energy from JERA.

By promoting the integration of power and telecommunications (“watt-bit collaboration”), the companies aim to accelerate development of the DCs that are essential for upgrading industrial structure, thereby helping to resolve Japan’s “digital deficit,” make efficient use of power infrastructure, contribute to decarbonization, and strengthen Japan’s industrial competitiveness.

MAIN POINTS TO BE EXPLORED
The following are the main points to be explored related to the feasibility of SAKURA internet developing DCs on the grounds of LNG thermal power stations owned by JERA on Tokyo Bay and elsewhere:
•    The conditions governing SAKURA internet’s use of JERA thermal power stations as DC sites,
•    The utilization of JERA regassification terminals to provide cold energy to reduce energy consumption at DC facilities developed by SAKURA internet, and
•    The supply of energy to DC facilities developed by SAKURA internet and the use of various technologies to decarbonize it in the future.
