JERA Begins Joint Demonstration Testing of Film-type Perovskite Solar Cells with SEKISUI CHEMICAL2023/03/27

JERA Co., Inc. (“JERA”) and SEKISUI CHEMICAL Co., Ltd. (“SEKISUI CHEMICAL”) began joint demonstration testing on 24 March related to the installation of thin-film perovskite solar cells at thermal power plants.

Capable of being installed on enclosure walls and other locations where weight restrictions apply, the film-type perovskite solar cells being developed by SEKISUI CHEMICAL are expected to be a promising option for expanding the adoption of photovoltaic equipment.

　JERA, as Japan’s largest power company, aims to further promote decarbonization by adopting renewable energy at our thermal power plants. Since such plants are located along the coast, however, the installation of solar panels or other photovoltaic equipment requires that they be resistant to salt damage.

JERA and SEKISUI CHEMICAL, therefore, have installed film-type perovskite solar cells at Yokosuka Thermal Power Station and Kashima Thermal Power Station and begun joint demonstration testing to verify their resistance to salt damage and to measure their generating efficiency. Looking to begin operation at Yokosuka Thermal Power Station beginning in 2025, we are moving forward to verify ways to install the equipment on the walls and roofs of on-site enclosures at the power station and to ensure legal and regulatory compliance as we seek to further expand the scope for potential solar cells installations to other power stations and beyond.

　This is the first example of film-type perovskite solar cells demonstration testing at thermal power plants in Japan.

JERA is working aggressively to develop and adopt renewable energy. Through its efforts with SEKISUI CHEMICAL related to next-generation solar cells, JERA works to promote the spread of renewable energy and to contribute to a stable energy supply while seeking to achieve its JERA Zero CO₂ Emissions 2050 objectives.
