Collaboration with IHI Asia Pacific for the expansion of ammonia usage in Malaysia2022/10/26

JERA Co., Ltd., (“JERA”), has announced that its subsidiary, JERA Asia Pte. Ltd. ("JERA Asia"), will collaborate with IHI Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. ("IHI AP") to explore potential ways to expand the use of ammonia in Malaysia’s energy sector.

Malaysia's 12th Malaysia Plan declares that it will reduce GHG emissions by 45% by 2030 (from 2005 levels) and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Both ammonia and hydrogen are expected to play a role in achieving this goal.

The Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) signed between JERA Asia and IHI AP stipulates that the two parties will jointly study ammonia co-firing in thermal power plants in Malaysia in order to contribute to decarbonization through the expansion of ammonia use in the country.

JERA and IHI are working together on a grant from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to establish the technology for co-firing 20% fuel ammonia at the Hekinan Thermal Power Station and to conduct demonstration projects aimed at achieving a co-firing ratio of more than 50%. In addition to these initiatives, JERA, with its expertise in ammonia and power plant operations, can contribute to the decarbonization of Malaysia by working with IHI, which has a track record of delivering more than 50% of the installed coal thermal power boiler capacity currently in operation in the country.

“JERA is on a mission to provide cutting edge solutions to the world’s energy issues and we see significant potential for ammonia and hydrogen to support decarbonization efforts. We believe this MoU offers a positive opportunity to consider how ammonia can be leveraged for carbon neutral power generation in Malaysia. Through this collaboration, JERA will build upon its experience in power generation to help enable the energy transition in the region,” said Toshiro Kudama, Chief Executive Officer, JERA Asia

As a global company providing cutting-edge solutions to the world's energy problems, JERA will contribute to sustainable development in Asia including Malaysia and around the world by offering clean energy platform of renewables and low greenhouse gas thermal power.
