First Look at JERA Museum Hekinan: the New Landmark of Zero-Emission Thermal Power

19 April 2024

Hekinantantopia Electricity Museum, adjacent to the Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture, has long been cherished by the local community, serving as a hub for community engagement. On Saturday, March 23, the museum reopened its doors under its new name, JERA Museum Hekinan.

We visited the facility on the occasion of the museum’s reopening to catch a first look.

We arrive at the entrance of JERA Museum Hekinan, designed to be an immersive museum at the forefront of zero-emissions thermal power generation.
Let's take a look inside.

Our visit starts with the Vision Theater, a dynamic 360-degree immersive theater experience offering a comprehensive showcase of JERA's mission and vision, as well as its zero-emission thermal power initiatives, starting with the Hekinan Thermal Power Station. This is where visitors first come into contact with JERA's initiatives and aspirations.

As we venture further into the museum, a luminous blue globe comes into view. The JERA Data sphere, standing three meters wide, uses visual graphics to present JERA's operations across the globe.
Visitors can use the touch screens to navigate JERA's various power generation operations and projects across the world on the rotating globe. Meanwhile, they can also use the screens to watch animations that introduce each project and explain the power generation process on the screens. Next to the globe is a display detailing JERA's thermal power generation business in Japan, which boasts the largest power generation capacity in the country. Visitors can use the touch screen in this area to freely explore and learn about JERA's operations in Japan.

Moving further into the museum, we find a model of a zero-emission city. This is a 1:720 scale model of the adjacent Hekinan Thermal Power Station. A combination of video screens and projection mapping onto the model showcases the role of the power station and its future initiatives at the forefront of zero-emissions thermal power generation.

At last, we reach the final area of the museum. We are greeted with bird song from a screen projecting a lovely, lush landscape. Here, we see future images of the JERA Forest (formerly Eco Park) once we have achieved zero CO2 emissions in 2050. The expansive forest attracts wild birds in every season. As we approach the screen, a kingfisher starts to follow us. The wild birds on screen are colorful, endearing, and fun to interact with.

In addition to the exhibition areas, the museum also houses a book lounge well-stocked with children’s books, books on energy and environmental issues, and a kids' room where small children can play freely.

Walking through the museum, we enjoyed learning about JERA's projects unfolding across the globe and other cutting-edge initiatives at Hekinan Thermal Power Station. We hope that JERA Museum Hekinan can serve as a catalyst for thinking about the importance of energy and raise awareness of environmental protection. We hope that you'll visit the museum the next time you're nearby.
